Credit \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The new remains in question, found in coffins, have been sent for forensic analysis, the Office of the Director of Authorized Intervention said. Director Daniel MacSweeney revealed that so far, 160 people have contacted the office to offer DNA samples, in the hope of identifying the bodies.<\/p>\n<p>As per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/jun\/16\/preparatory-work-to-identify-remains-of-800-infants-at-irish-mother-and-baby-home-begins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Guardian<\/a>, Catherine Corless, a local historian in County Galway, Ireland, was the first to sound the alarm about the harrowing past of the baby home. Corless\u2019 initial research uncovered the names of 798 infants believed to have been buried there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1432103436\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-1e0d6a144ccc4f4e5c97c17f63f8d2af\" class=\"newsner-1e0d6a144ccc4f4e5c97c17f63f8d2af newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many babies, children just discarded here,\u201d Corless told Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n<p>Corless alleges that many of the youngsters who died at the institution were discarded in a septic tank referred to as \u201cthe pit\u201d. (Photo by Charles McQuillan\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the home, women and girls would be separated from their newborn children, who were then raised by nuns until they were adopted without the mother\u2019s knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/10\/world-news\/new-baby-graveyard-found-at-tuam-ireland-home-where-796-infants-were-feared-dumped\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Post<\/a>\u00a0write that some of the children were sent as far away as the US, Canada or Australia. Hundreds of others died.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, the Irish government set up an investigation into 14 mother and baby homes and four county homes across Ireland, including Tuam.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/opening-the-pit-dig-for-remains-of-800-infants-at-former-mother-and-baby-home-in-ireland-begins-13384111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sky News,<\/a>\u00a0Corless, whose tireless work led to the commission of investigation into the homes, said earlier this year: \u201cI\u2019m feeling very relieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a long, long journey. Not knowing what\u2019s going to happen, if it\u2019s just going to fall apart or if it\u2019s really going to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Sisters of Bon Secours, a religious order of Catholic nuns who operated the Tuam home, offered their \u201cprofound apologies\u201d. Corless, though, still has trouble fathoming how such depravity could have taken place.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-332567023\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-3ec0c057c665fff498357f933ad32f59\" class=\"newsner-3ec0c057c665fff498357f933ad32f59 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe church preached to look after the vulnerable, the old and the orphaned, but they never included illegitimate children for some reason or another in their own psyche,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never, ever understand how they could do that to little babies, little toddlers.
