I\u2019m a 32-year-old mom, and until two weeks ago, I truly believed the worst thing December could throw at me was a forgotten gift or my daughter catching a winter cold right before her holiday play.<\/p>\n

It was Ruby\u2019s preschool teacher, Ms. Allen.<\/p>\n

MOLLY.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ms. Allen lowered her voice. \u201cRuby talks about Molly a lot. Not casually. She mentions her in stories, drawings, even during singing time. I didn\u2019t want you to be blindsided.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded and smiled because that\u2019s what adults do when they\u2019re trying not to fall apart in front of children.<\/p>\n

But inside, something cracked.<\/p>\n

That night, after dinner and bath time, I lay beside Ruby as I tucked her under her Christmas blanket. I brushed her hair back and asked, as casually as I could manage, \u201cSweetheart\u2026 who\u2019s Molly?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her face lit up instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh! Molly is Daddy\u2019s friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaddy\u2019s friend?\u201d I repeated.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah! We see her on Saturdays.\u201d<\/p>\n

Saturdays.<\/p>\n

The word echoed painfully.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you do with her?\u201d I asked, keeping my voice steady.<\/p>\n

Ruby giggled. \u201cFun stuff! The arcade, and the caf\u00e9 with the cookies. Sometimes we get hot chocolate even though Daddy says it\u2019s too sweet.\u201d<\/p>\n

My blood ran cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long have you been seeing Molly?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

She counted on her fingers. \u201cSince you started your new job. So\u2026 a loooong time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Six months.<\/p>\n

Six months ago, I\u2019d taken a higher-paying position in project management. It came with stress, long hours, and one major sacrifice\u2014I worked Saturdays. I told myself it was temporary. Necessary. Responsible.<\/p>\n

I kissed Ruby goodnight, locked myself in the bathroom, and cried silently into a towel so no one would hear me.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the part I\u2019m not proud of:
\nI didn\u2019t confront my husband that night.<\/p>\n

Dan had always been good at sounding reasonable. Calm. Charming. I knew if I accused him without proof, he\u2019d explain it away and leave me questioning my own sanity.<\/p>\n

I followed from a distance, my heart pounding so loudly I could hear it in my ears. The dot stopped in front of a cozy building decorated with wreaths and string lights.<\/p>\n
