I strapped my baby to my chest and went alone, expecting a routine conversation. Maybe an awkward apology delivered through professional language. Maybe reassurance that everything was fine.<\/p>\n

Instead, Dr. Patel walked into the room holding a sealed envelope, her face pale and tense.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe police?\u201d I asked, panic rising fast. \u201cWhy? Did Ryan do something?\u201d<\/p>\n

She placed the envelope on her desk without opening it. \u201cI want to be very careful with my words,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is not about relationship problems. This concerns a potential crime. And your baby\u2019s safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart began to pound so hard I could feel it in my throat. \u201cIs the test wrong?\u201d I asked. \u201cWas there a mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe DNA results are back,\u201d she said gently. \u201cThey are not what anyone expected. The baby is not biologically related to your husband.\u201d<\/p>\n

For half a second, relief tried to surface. If that were true, Ryan would look foolish, and this nightmare might finally end.<\/p>\n

But Dr. Patel\u2019s expression didn\u2019t soften.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd,\u201d she continued, \u201cthe baby is not biologically related to you either.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room tilted.<\/p>\n

I pressed my hand to my chest, struggling to breathe. \u201cSo what does this mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means law enforcement must be notified immediately,\u201d she replied. \u201cIf this was an accidental exchange, we need to locate the other infant right away. If it was intentional, this becomes a criminal investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Without realizing it, I tightened my arms around the baby carrier. He slept peacefully, unaware that the ground beneath my life had completely given way.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you saying someone took my baby?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m saying we don\u2019t know yet,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we can\u2019t afford to wait.\u201d<\/p>\n

She slid her phone toward me. \u201cI can stay with you while you call. Please don\u2019t leave the building.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hands shook as I dialed. When the dispatcher answered, my voice sounded distant, like it belonged to someone else.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m at Saint Mary\u2019s Hospital,\u201d I said. \u201cMy doctor told me to call. They believe my baby may have been switched.\u201d<\/p>\n

As I spoke, I saw two uniformed officers step off the elevator at the end of the hallway, walking toward us with purpose.<\/p>\n
