\u201cWE MUST RETURN HIM!\u201d my husband yelled as he ran out of the restroom. I was taken aback. My mind was racing with a million ideas, and my heart fell. In just one minute, what could have gone so wrong?<\/p>\n

With a towel in his hand, our adorable child with blue eyes waited silently at the bathroom door. His small face seemed apprehensive and bewildered, as if he had already learnt to anticipate rejection.<\/p>\n

Without hesitation, I lowered myself to Sam\u2019s level and held his small hands tenderly. \u201cSam, would you mind taking a quick trip to your room, my love? Daddy and Mommy should have a conversation.<\/p>\n

Sam moved away after nodding, his gaze darting tensely between us. Fire flaming in my chest, I turned to my husband as soon as he was out of earshot. \u201cBut what the devil is wrong with you?\u201d<\/p>\n

With a pale face and a shaking hand, my spouse gestured toward the restroom. He said, \u201cGo look.\u201d \u201cJust\u2026 take a look.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still seething, I stormed into the bathroom. At first, nothing looked out of place\u2014until I discovered something in the tub. My breath caught. What appeared to be a patch of hair\u2014no, it wasn\u2019t hair\u2014**a wig** floated there in the water.<\/p>\n

I took it in my hands and flipped it over. It wasn\u2019t just ordinary wig, either; it was hauntingly accurate and made to resemble natural hair growth. With my head whirling, I held it and walked back out. \u201cWhat is this?\u201d My voice trembled as I asked.<\/p>\n

My spouse cried, \u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019m trying to figure out.\u201d As I began to shampoo his hair, it simply fell out! He\u2019s bald\u2014bald all over!<\/p>\n

For a brief moment, we stood in startled silence, and then I recalled something I had quickly glanced over in the excitement of bringing Sam home, hidden deep in his adoption dossier. \u201cOh God,\u201d I muttered. \u201cAlopecia is the cause.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

I clarified, \u201cSam has alopecia areata.\u201d Hair loss is a symptom of an autoimmune disease. The documents contained it. I suppose I was unaware of how serious it was.<\/p>\n

My husband gave me a disbelieving look. \u201cYou mean you were aware of this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a huge deal to me!\u201d I fired back. It\u2019s only hair, and he\u2019s a kid. Why is it important?<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t tell me, so it matters!\u201d<\/p>\n

A tiny voice cut us off just as I was about to continue our argument. \u201cMom? \u201cDaddy?\u201d<\/p>\n
