I\u2019ve actually never said that out loud to anybody in an interview before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/general-news\/julianne-hough-sexually-abused-child-neighbor-trauma-healing-1235977722\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recalled<\/a>\u00a0the moment she told her mother about what happened after coming home as a child with her clothes inside out. Her mom \u201cfreaked out,\u201d and that\u2019s when the family decided to move. \u201cI guess my mom did do what she could,\u201d she admitted, fighting back tears. \u201cShe just wanted to move and leave. She didn\u2019t want to deal with it. She didn\u2019t want to talk about it, but she did want to get us out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting that she wasn\u2019t the only family member to go through similar trauma, she reflected, \u201cThat was a very, very confusing time because obviously growing up in the Mormon culture, everything needs to be perfect. Everybody needs to put on the shiny, \u2018We\u2019ve-got-our-stuff-together.\u2019 And there was not a lot of repercussion for what had happened. So that was a very challenging thing to come to terms with, that nobody did anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-135996916\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-3479e490bb873680e7b11279eef2e378\" class=\"newsner-3479e490bb873680e7b11279eef2e378 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-raised-in-a-mormon-household\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Raised in a Mormon household<\/h2>\n<p>She was born in Orem, Utah, the youngest of five siblings in a Mormon household.<\/p>\n<p>Her parents, Bruce and Marianne, raised the family in a politically active environment \u2014 her father served twice as chairman of the Utah Republican Party and ran for Utah\u2019s 2nd congressional district in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Another defining theme in the family was dancing.<\/p>\n<p>Today, this 37-year-old is celebrated for her beauty and talent and has achieved remarkable success. But her journey to stardom wasn\u2019t easy \u2014 she battled anxiety and depression as a child, faced harsh bullying in high school, and has even dealt with body-shaming in recent years.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-184705 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/01\/22093516\/edfe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"437\" height=\"564\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/01\/22093516\/edfe.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CP8fnFOM_mP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Instagram<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201dI don\u2019t think a lot of people would know that about me because I come off as sunshine and happiness and positivity,\u201d she once\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/health\/how-julianne-hough-overcame-depression-and-anxiety-dancing-was-my-superpower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coming from a family of professional dancers, she naturally followed in their footsteps, starting competitive dance at just 9 years old, with many spotting her talent early on.<\/p>\n<p>But her world was shaken when she was 10. Her parents went through a bitter divorce, and she was sent across the Atlantic to live with family friends in London. The move was tied to her enrollment at the prestigious Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-left-home-at-10\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Left home at 10<\/h2>\n<p>Growing up in Europe forced her to mature quickly. Leaving home each morning at 6:45, she navigated the subway alone to get to school.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-269109000\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-377c4744a2cdd448521b6994e512b6f2\" class=\"newsner-377c4744a2cdd448521b6994e512b6f2 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI remember one of my first days there I got off at the wrong train station,\u201d she recalled to\u00a0<em>People<\/em>. \u201cI was just standing there thinking, \u2018Where am I?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Being so young in the adult world of ballroom dance was especially challenging.<\/p>\n<p>She told\u00a0<em>Cosmopolitan<\/em>\u00a0in 2013 that adults around her sometimes took advantage of her since she was away from her parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWhile I was in London, I was abused, mentally, physically, everything\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey never got reprimanded for it because we didn\u2019t say something,\u201d she explained. \u201cInstead, we just pivoted and we just moved \u2014 which is good, get out of a situation \u2014 but also that\u2019s another thing which is for me, just pivot, pivot, pivot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In London, she faced a grueling schedule and constant pressure to maintain a specific image.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI was 10 years old looking like I was 28, being a very sensual dancer,\u201d she told Cosmo. \u201dI was a tormented little kid who had to put on this sexy facade because that was my job and my life. But my heart was the same, and I was this innocent little girl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I look back, I think it\u2019s so sad I have no pictures of me with a cute, bare, 10-year-old face,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-bullied-in-high-school\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bullied in high school<\/h2>\n<p>After moving back to the U.S., she enrolled at the Las Vegas Academy and Alta High School. But life in America wasn\u2019t exactly what she had expected at first.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-975073130\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-a34e2fef2e3a5775c9825828188ba546\" class=\"newsner-a34e2fef2e3a5775c9825828188ba546 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201dI got bullied in high school big-time. I had just come back from London and was the new kid. People looked at me like, \u2018She thinks she\u2019s all that,\u2019\u201d she told Redbook in 2014. \u201dAnd because I didn\u2019t know how to talk to them, maybe I did come across that way? I don\u2019t know. I got asked to prom by a guy, and he ended up ditching me that day because the girls had told him to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But even though she was bullied and battled her own demons, the gifted dancer still shone brightly, dominating competitions and earning prestigious wins by the age of 15. The two dated from 2010 to 2013, and she didn\u2019t hide her feelings during their time together. \u201cHe is such an influential guy \u2026 and what if it didn\u2019t work out? Our first date, I was so nervous that I just sat there and interviewed him with questions like, \u2018Are you loyal?\u2019 and \u2018Are you close to your family?\u2019\u201d she told\u00a0<em>InStyle<\/em>\u00a0)n 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very in love, and it feels great. She acknowledged that her parents felt a sense of guilt when they learned what she had endured during her teenage years. At the time, they didn\u2019t know how to respond and often felt helpless, unsure of how to support her.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-ready-for-love-again\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ready for love again?<\/h2>\n<p>In 2025, Julianne Hough opened up about being ready for love \u2014 but on her own terms. The\u00a0<em>Dancing with the Stars<\/em>\u00a0host told E! News that she\u2019s drawn more to energy than appearances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt\u2019s all energy-based,\u201d she explained. \u201c\u201d don\u2019t really have a type. It\u2019s more connection, and that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julianne Hough has been open about her battle with endometriosis, a painful condition affecting the tissue lining the uterus. It was more of a precautionary measure: Let\u2019s do our due diligence for the future by freezing eggs,\u201d she told Women\u2019s Health.<\/p>\n<p>In the same interview, she shared how her symptoms had improved, which she attributed to \u201dthe love and kindness I\u2019m giving to my body.\u201d She added, \u201dI believe there\u2019s stress, shame, guilt, and suppression of female energy that\u2019s associated with endometriosis, so de-layering that has really helped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And what about that infamous Halloween costume Julianne Hough wore back in 2013? She showed up at a party dressed as Crazy Eyes from\u00a0<em>Orange Is the New Black<\/em>, sparking immediate backlash. Hough quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to apologize after her blackface Halloween costume drew criticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI am a huge fan of the show \u2018Orange is the New Black,\u2019 actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created,\u201d she penned. \u201dIt certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people, and I truly apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uzo Aduba, who portrayed Crazy Eyes on the show, commented on Hough\u2019s decision. \u201dI think maybe it was an unfortunate event, but she apologized, and I feel like we can all move on,\u201d she told E!
