But ahead of his 75th birthday, the legendary musician appeared on BBC\u2019s Eras podcast, where he opened up about his current struggles.<\/p>\n<p>Collins shared: \u201cI have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do. I\u2019ve had challenges with my knee. I had everything that could go wrong with me, did go wrong with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The music icon has undergone five knee surgeries, leaving him with only one functioning knee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can walk, albeit with assistance, you know, crutches or whatever,\u201d he said. Collins has also struggled with drop-foot, a condition that has left one of his feet numb since a spinal procedure in 2007, forcing him to use a cane since 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, Collins underwent surgery on his upper neck to fix an issue that had started while drumming on Genesis\u2019 2007 tour. After the procedure, he lost sensation in his fingers and could only hold drumsticks if they were taped to his hands.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-alcohol-abuse-messed-up-his-kidneys\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alcohol abuse \u2018messed up\u2019 his kidneys<\/h2>\n<p>Four years ago, Collins performed his final show sitting down at London\u2019s O2 Arena on Genesis\u2019\u00a0<em>The Last Domino? Tour<\/em>, with his 24-year-old son Nic taking over on drums. His health issues were compounded by COVID and kidney problems, which he attributes in part to his past heavy drinking. He is now two years sober.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1668489882\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-774b92c9a696656e5fd18519808630e5\" class=\"newsner-774b92c9a696656e5fd18519808630e5 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201dI\u2019d probably been drinking too much, and so my kidneys were messed up, you know,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed coming off tour. Coming off the road \u2026 I thought, right, I\u2019m gonna do all those things that I couldn\u2019t do,\u201d he said. \u201cI guess I had too much of it. I was never drunk, although I fell over a couple of times.
