Science can offer averages, but the \u201cperfect\u201d duration is ultimately subjective.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, studies that track the time from penetration to ejaculation, also known as\u00a0<strong>intra-ejaculatory latency<\/strong>, estimate that sexual intercourse lasts about\u00a0<strong>five minutes<\/strong>\u00a0on average.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, men tend to perceive their sex life as lasting longer, with many estimating around\u00a0<strong>nine minutes<\/strong>. Research suggests the \u201cideal\u201d encounter might hover near\u00a0<strong>16 minutes<\/strong>, but reality often differs from expectation.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What women actually want<\/h3>\n<p>To understand women\u2019s perspectives,\u00a0<strong>GQ writer Sophia Benoit<\/strong>\u00a0conducted informal interviews in 2019. She asked women how long they wanted sexual encounters to last and analyzed the responses.<\/p>\n<p>The results? Most women preferred sex to last between\u00a0<strong>five and ten minutes<\/strong>, especially when foreplay was included beforehand. Benoit noted that many studies only measure penetrative sex, which doesn\u2019t always capture the full sexual experience for many women.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cPeople often say they want sex to last longer than it actually does,\u201d Benoit wrote. \u201cMost women I spoke with underestimated their own preferences. In reality, their ideal duration was in line with, or even above, the average of around 5.4 minutes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expert insights on sexual duration<\/h3>\n<p>Sexual health experts agree that there isn\u2019t a universal answer. On an episode of\u00a0<strong>Steven Bartlett\u2019s Diary of a CEO<\/strong>, psychiatrist\u00a0<strong>Dr. Alok Kanojia<\/strong>, sexual health professional\u00a0<strong>Dr. Rena Malik<\/strong>, and adult film director\u00a0<strong>Erika Lust<\/strong>\u00a0discussed the \u201cideal\u201d length of sex.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kanojia explained, \u201cThe average sexual encounter lasts between three to seven minutes, and roughly half of women I\u2019ve spoken to don\u2019t want sex to continue beyond 15 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"autors-widget\">\n<p>Dr. Malik added that men and women differ in how long it takes to reach climax: on average, men may ejaculate in five to six minutes, while women may require up to 14 minutes to climax.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bottom line<\/h3>\n<p>Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to how long sex should last. The most important factors are\u00a0<strong>communication, comfort, and mutual enjoyment<\/strong>.
