At this stage, it remains unclear what specific charges he may face, according to CBS.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-9\">\n<div id=\"readupdatednews.com_responsive_1\" data-google-query-id=\"CJOFw4DRuZIDFaCqgwcdHhc6OA\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/23207117756\/readupdatednews.com\/readupdatednews.com_responsive_1_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Lemon\u2019s attorney, Abbe Lowell, confirmed his client was taken into custody and strongly criticized the Justice Department\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-22143\" src=\"https:\/\/readupdatednews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/shutterstock_1389126944-218x300.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/readupdatednews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/shutterstock_1389126944-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/readupdatednews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/shutterstock_1389126944.jpg 727w\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done,\u201d Lowell said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role it is to shine light on the truth and hold those in power accountable. There is no more important time for people like Don to be doing this work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lowell went further, accusing federal authorities of targeting Lemon instead of investigating the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, two protesters killed earlier this month in Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of investigating the federal agents who killed two peaceful Minnesota protesters, the Trump Justice Department is devoting its time, attention and resources to this arrest, and that is the real indictment of wrongdoing in this case,\u201d Lowell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis unprecedented attack on the First Amendment and transparent attempt to distract attention from the many crises facing this administration will not stand. Don will fight these charges vigorously and thoroughly in court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to court filings, a federal appellate court last week declined to force a lower court judge to approve arrest warrants for five individuals connected to the protest, including Lemon. However, one appellate judge stated there was probable cause to justify.<\/p>\n<p>Lemon, who has worked as an independent journalist since being fired by CNN in 2023, previously said he traveled to Minneapolis amid weeks of protests because \u201cI believe in the Constitution and I believe, especially, in the First Amendment and that all journalists should be here if they have the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1691649\" data-uid=\"0c6f9\">\n<div id=\"mgw1691649_0c6f9\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"mgbox\">\n<div class=\"mgheader\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former CNN anchor and longtime journalist Don Lemon has been arrested by federal agents, according to multiple reports.
