She once described herself as a \u201cdark kid,\u201d but today she inspires many and spreads love.<\/p>\n<p>The Emmy-winning actress was born in 1971 into a life that was chaotic from the very start. Her father, Bobby, worked as a staff producer, while her mother made her living as a singer and actress. The couple separated shortly after her birth, and she was raised by her mother. Instead, it was marked by instability and trauma, including experiences of molestation and abuse, witnessing her single mother struggle with heroin addiction, and enduring the violence of a physically abusive boyfriend who also turned his anger on her.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most serious events in her childhood was being abused by a female babysitter when she was just five, an experience the actress recently revealed in her memoir.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I had kind of the worst situation from 3 to 7, but there was stuff like that going on in all our homes. Single moms, men coming in and out, drugs. It\u2019s always fun to see your mom crying on the floor and you not being taken care of,\u201d she told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/christina-applegate-hopes-to-empower-others-with-her-revealing-memoir-exclusive-11912521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">People<\/a>, reflecting ruefully on her childhood.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-tv-debut-as-a-toddler\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">TV debut as a toddler<\/h2>\n<p>As mentioned earlier, her mother was a well-known actress with roles in iconic 1970s and \u201980s TV shows like\u00a0<em>Bewitched<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Waltons<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>The Young &amp; the Restless<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-ee83b470b192c8dd0120509bca6b9cf2\" class=\"newsner-ee83b470b192c8dd0120509bca6b9cf2 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-space\" data-google-query-id=\"CKzxtturgpMDFZHaDQkdkM8WwQ\">\n<p>It was hardly surprising that the star developed an early interest in show business.<\/p>\n<p>She made her first television appearance at just one year old alongside her mother in the soap opera\u00a0<em>Days of Our Lives<\/em>\u00a0and even starred in a commercial for Playtex baby bottles at three months old. At just 10 years old, she made her film debut in the horror movie\u00a0<em>Jaws of Satan<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A few years later, she portrayed a young Grace Kelly in the 1983 television biopic\u00a0<em>Grace Kelly<\/em>\u00a0and made her first regular TV appearance in Showtime\u2019s political comedy\u00a0<em>Washingtoon<\/em>\u00a0(1985), playing the daughter of a congressman.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-42784\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-stories.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/02123231\/insa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"613\" height=\"797\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUjDxGwD6qi\/?hl=en&amp;img_index=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Instagram<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With a famous mother and the whirlwind of Hollywood surrounding her, she had to grow up fast, learning to perform, adapt, and survive, all while trying to find a sense of who she really was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019ve lived my own life,\u201d she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/parade.com\/news\/80s-sitcom-queen-christina-applegate-shares-heartbreaking-realization-about-her-own-life\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">confessed<\/a>\u00a0last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dI\u2019ve been this other person my whole life. And that\u2019s a pretty heavy thing and I\u2019m just her, and I don\u2019t even know who she is and I\u2019m 53 years old. I lived on sets and you had to be what you had to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But this was hardly something the young actress reflected on as a child or teen.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-notorious-teenage-sex-bomb\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Notorious teenage sex bomb<\/h2>\n<p>In, 1987 she truly made her mark as the family\u2019s breadwinner, landing a role in the hit Fox sitcom\u00a0<em>Married\u2026 With Children<\/em>. The part would catapult her to fame, making her far more successful than her own mother.<\/p>\n<p>Playing the notorious teenage \u201dsex bomb\u201d Kelly Bundy gave the actress a brutal breakthrough in Hollywood, and overnight she became instantly recognizable on the streets of Los Angeles. But in a 1989 interview with\u00a0<em>The Boston Globe<\/em>, she pointed out the differences between herself and her character.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not saying I\u2019m Mary Poppins or anything, but I\u2019m definitely not the little bimbo she is. It\u2019s a very large leap. But it\u2019s not really that hard to play her because, growing up here in Los Angeles, you meet a lot of people like that at clubs,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>While her career was skyrocketing, her personal life faced much rougher times, including a long-term relationship with an abusive boyfriend that began in her late teens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom always said, \u2018I never met a junkie I didn\u2019t like.\u2019 And that kind of was how I rolled,\u201d she says. \u201cI never was with anyone who had a real job. I was always with these broken birds that I wanted to fix. I just always thought I could do it. And you know what? You can\u2019t. Of course, we\u2019re talking about none other than Christina Applegate.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the 54-year-old actress is a heavyweight in Hollywood. She earned her first Golden Globe nomination for her lead role in the sitcom\u00a0<em>Jesse<\/em>. The book,\u00a0<em>You With the Sad Eyes<\/em>, is, by her own admission, not exactly an inspirational read.<\/p>\n<p>But maybe \u201dit can inspire\u201d, Applegate told People.<\/p>\n<p>According to the star, the memoir \u201cis about a little girl with sad eyes who ended up becoming Christina Applegate,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd she still has those sad eyes. But she\u2019s a stronger, different, resilient human being. And that\u2019s really kind of my story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As many may already know, Applegate has faced incredibly tough challenges in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2021, she announced she would step back from on-screen roles but continue voice work. In 2026, she revealed that she now spends most of her day bedridden due to pain from MS, a chronic and often disabling autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-next-project\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next project<\/h2>\n<p>Her daily routine with her 15-year-old daughter, Sadie, whom she shares with her husband, musician Martyn LeNoble, is especially difficult because of the constant need to drive her to school and activities.<\/p>\n<p>The hardest part, she says, is not being able to be a more active parent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to take her; it\u2019s my favorite thing to do.
