She grew up under the shadow of a controlling parent and constant financial struggles, while a serious health issue in the family added even more pressure to an already fragile household.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of simply being a kid, she quickly became the one carrying her family\u2019s hopes \u2014 and sometimes, their burdens \u2014 on her young shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Born on June 26, 1992, in California, this famous woman grew up in Garden Grove in a modest household. Her family were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The children often slept on Costco trifold gymnastics mats in the living room because their bedrooms were so packed that it was impossible to find or use the beds.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother\u2019s husband, whom she grew up believing was her biological father, worked two jobs to support the family. Later in life, after her mother\u2019s passing, she discovered that he was not her biological father.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-her-mother-pushed-her\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her mother pushed her<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s said that the future star first became interested in acting after watching\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/harrison-ford\/\">Harrison Ford<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Star Wars: Episode IV \u2013 A New Hope<\/em>, shortly after her mother recovered from breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>It was her mother who pushed relentlessly for her daughter to become a Hollywood star. Simple milestones like a first period or a first kiss were complicated by the glare of the public eye.<\/p>\n<p>And her mother\u2019s grip was still tight, managing every aspect of her life.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother was \u201ca narcissist\u201d who subjected her to emotional, mental, and physical abuse. She pressured her into acting from a young age and even encouraged disordered eating. Shockingly, she continued to insist on giving her daughter showers into her late teens, claiming she wasn\u2019t washing properly.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-2013-marked-a-turning-point\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">2013 marked a turning point<\/h2>\n<p>While fans saw a confident, talented performer, the reality was a young girl learning to navigate fame while contending with overbearing parental control.<\/p>\n<p>As she moved into her late teens, she began to push back.<\/p>\n<p>Her career continued to flourish on Nickelodeon shows like\u00a0<em>iCarly<\/em>\u00a0and its spinoff, where she became known as a spirited, rebellious character beloved by millions. Whenever it was that I started to feel uncomfortable that Mom still showers me. She doesn\u2019t mean to make me uncomfortable, I don\u2019t think,\u201d she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.ua\/books\/edition\/I_m_Glad_My_Mom_Died\/lRhJEAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=i%27m+happy+my+mom+died&amp;printsec=frontcover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-leaving-hollywood\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leaving Hollywood<\/h2>\n<p>Five years after her mom\u2019s passing, she stepped away from acting entirely.<\/p>\n<p>She realized she needed to break free from her mother\u2019s ambitions and carve out her own path. One way she began to process her trauma was by writing a book,\u00a0<em>I\u2019m Glad My Mom Died<\/em>, which was published in 2022 and became a New York Times bestseller.<\/p>\n<p>In the book, she revealed that until she was 17, her mother conducted invasive vaginal and breast exams on her under the guise of medical checkups or cancer screenings and never allowed her to shower alone. I would have had something to hope for; something to be encouraged about.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-her-mom-s-secret\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Her mom\u2019s secret<\/h2>\n<p>In her memoirs, McCurdy also revealed that she didn\u2019t learn until after her mother\u2019s death that the man she had grown up believing was her father was not her biological parent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get how complicated [my father\u2019s] role in that family was,\u201d\u00a0she explained to BuzzFeed. \u201dMy mom had this long affair, had these three other children that weren\u2019t his, and I imagine the timing of her cancer played a factor in his sticking around. There were cases where people had the best intentions and maybe didn\u2019t know what they were doing. And also cases where they did \u2014 they knew exactly what they were doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On one occasion, she says her mother did nothing when an authority figure, whom she calls \u201cthe Creator,\u201d gave her alcohol.<\/p>\n<p>At another point, she wished her mother had stepped in when she was pressured to pose in a bikini as a teen.
