The High Court of Australia on Wednesday, March 11, ruled that the designer had not hurt the singer\u2019s reputation or misled consumers with her clothing brand named after herself, which she started in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Katy Perry, whose real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, was locked in a legal feud for over a decade with Katie Perry, who, since getting married, goes by the name Katie Taylor. She has been selling clothing under her brand \u2018Katie Perry\u2019 since 2008, online and on social media.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-9c92b03a507b2cfb37b338a2cb5ff5dd\" class=\"newsner-9c92b03a507b2cfb37b338a2cb5ff5dd newsner-incide_content_once\">\n<div id=\"newsner-1738492342\" class=\"newsner-incide_content_once\">\n<div id=\"taboola-mid-article-thumbnails\" class=\"trc_related_container tbl-trecs-container trc_spotlight_widget trc_elastic trc_elastic_thumbnails-mid\" data-placement-name=\"Mid Article Thumbnails\">\n<div class=\"trc_rbox_container\">\n<div>\n<div id=\"trc_wrapper_347164451\" class=\"trc_rbox thumbnails-mid trc-content-sponsored\">\n<div id=\"trc_header_347164451\" class=\"trc_rbox_header trc_rbox_border_elm\">\n<div class=\"trc_header_ext\">\n<p>In 2009, Katy Perry\u2019s lawyers sent her a cease-and-desist letter for her brand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had never heard of the singer when I started my label,\u201d Taylor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/katy-perry-loses-bitter-16-year-legal-battle-against-katie-perry\/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_term=bp_2359458&amp;utm_campaign=bored-panda&amp;utm_content=image&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawQfYcJleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFrWGhuQnNUbGtWUjQ2UDRUc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHjoyWGP28dCu1FyAhe4VEKNpzAjb2ik53rjzkv3Cu79J1sRe8T8afPf-pjpX_aem_EZyDTvf5WD8HJS12o-keQg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0that she had first heard of the singer in mid-2008 when her song \u00a0<em>I Kissed a Girl<\/em>\u00a0had been playing on the radio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was simply building a fashion business under the name I was born with,\u201d she clarified. The singer\u2019s spokesperson said, \u201cKaty Perry has never sought to close down Ms. Taylor\u2019s business or stop her from selling clothes under the Katie Perry label.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, by a 3:2 decision, the High Court determined that Ms. Taylor\u2019s trademark can remain on the register\u201d it said, continuing it read that the court had\u201csent the case back to the Full Federal Court to determine issues raised by Katy Perry, including Ms. Taylor\u2019s 10-year delay in bringing her case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And in a statement issued by Taylor\u2019s brand on their website, it said the decision showed that \u201ceven small Australian businesses\u201d could stand up for their rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case has never just been about a name,\u201d the statement said. \u201cIt has been about protecting\u00a0small businesses\u00a0in Australia, standing up for what\u2019s right, and showing that we all matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taylor also appeared on\u00a0<em>A Current Affair<\/em>, a prominent Australian news show. She said a big reason why she took Perry to court was to set an example for her children.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Katy Perry has made headlines for a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/lawsuit\/\">lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0brought against her. In 2015, Perry attempted to purchase a former convent in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, for $14.5 million; however, two nuns, Sister Catherine Rose Holzman and Sister Rita Callanan, objected to the sale that had already been approved by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Sister Holzman sadly died during a post-judgment court hearing.
