The little boy came into the world so wrinkled that doctors said they had never seen anything like it before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he came out I was quite shocked (\u2026) I didn\u2019t think a human, or a little baby, could ever look like that,\u201d Tomm\u2019s dad, Geoff Tennent, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QV4k3pBukyE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">60 Minutes Australia<\/a>\u00a0in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Since his remarkable birth, it has been a long and winding journey for Tomm and his family \u2013 but if we look at him today, 2021, it is difficult not to shed a tear.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-unique-child\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A unique child<\/h2>\n<p>When Tomm Tennent was born in South East Australia in 1993, his parents soon realized that he was going to be a special baby.<\/p>\n<p>But before the birth, no one could have guessed that their boy would be described as a medical mystery. However, ultrasounds showed that not everything was how it should be.<\/p>\n<p>When they heard this, Tomm\u2019s parents didn\u2019t know whether they would keep the child.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWe sort of discussed this between us, and we decided what\u2019s meant to be is meant to be and we went through with it,\u201d Tomm\u2019s dad, Geoff Tennent, said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1145390261\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-d3a40236287ea01a3081410cd3672ac9\" class=\"newsner-d3a40236287ea01a3081410cd3672ac9 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Despite all the tests and routine examinations, no one could have imagined the severity of Tomm\u2019s condition. His parents admitted they were shocked when they first saw him.<\/p>\n<p>Tomm\u2019s mom, Debbie Tennent, was shocked when her son was placed on her chest in the delivery room.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-88688 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/10\/05203939\/meidcal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"653\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/10\/05203939\/meidcal.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QV4k3pBukyE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Youtube<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy heart came up to my throat, but at the same time it was lovely to pick him up and cuddle him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-medical-mystery\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Medical mystery<\/h2>\n<p>To medical experts, the boy born with an excess of skin was a mystery. They couldn\u2019t figure out what was causing Tomm\u2019s excessive skin, and as a result, they had no treatment and no cure. At first, they hoped he would grow into his skin as he got older.<\/p>\n<p>But Tomm was so unique that researchers decided to invest time and money into studying his case, in a bid to solve the mystery surrounding his condition.<\/p>\n<p>In total, Tomm would spend two and a half months in a medical center, undergoing tests and analysis. Needless to say, scientists faced a huge challenge. No parent with a newborn baby wants to spend months at the hospital with all that entails. However, Geoff and Debbie found energy when looking at their strong baby boy. Tomm always remained a lovable toddler, totally unaware of his condition.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout this time, doctors continued to do everything in their power to find a solution to Tomm\u2019s medical problems.<\/p>\n<p>After digging deeper, they finally discovered something unexpected. The experts saw similarities between the way the Tomm looked and those of the Chinese dog breed, the Shar Pei. That discovery led them to some answers.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers discovered that Tomm\u2019s level of Hyaluronic acid, found in skin, was 100 times higher than normal, as is the case with Shar Pei puppies.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-88689 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/10\/05203938\/tennent1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"713\" height=\"462\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/10\/05203938\/tennent1.jpg\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QV4k3pBukyE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Youtube<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Given that the levels of Hyaluronic acid drop for Shar Peis as they grow up \u2013 leaving them with a more normal skin appearance \u2013 doctors hoped and prayed it would be the case for Tomm.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, it was. According to his doctor, Dr. Andrew Ramsden, the condition would probably disappear as Tomm got older. And he was right.<\/p>\n<p>Growing up, Tomm faced some challenges. He was loved and famous in his hometown, but some people could not help but tease him, especially when he started school. Some children didn\u2019t want to play with him.<\/p>\n<p>But he didn\u2019t let himself be discouraged by this, and it did not take long before Tomm made many friends and became fully integrated into his school. Tomm answered: \u201cNot really (\u2026) because they are my friends and they don\u2019t really care how I look like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tommy also told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QV4k3pBukyE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">60 Minutes<\/a>\u00a0that when he looked at himself in the mirror, he saw \u201ca kind loving person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued: \u201cSometimes they (people) say I look cool, sometimes they say I look really cool, and sometimes they don\u2019t say anything.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Tomm\u2019s parents have always been very proud of their special son. \u201cHe\u2019s a good boy\u201d (\u2026). They rightly believe that beauty comes from within and is more than skin deep.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-tomm-tennent-today-update\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tomm Tennent today, update<\/h2>\n<p>Today, it has been 28 years since Tomm was born, and he amazed the doctors. After the 60 Minutes documentaries, an incredible number of people wanted to know how things went for the boy with the big smile and excessive skin. However, there have not been many follow-ups with traditional media.<\/p>\n<p>And a look at social media still reveals little about the life that Tomm lives today. On his Facebook page, it appears he has married the love of his life, Hannah. The couple seems happy together and lives in Frankston, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dLife\u2019s simple. You make choices, and you don\u2019t look back\u201d is a quote Tomm posted on his Facebook profile that probably sums up his mindset and whole life.<\/p>\n<p>Surely it\u2019s wonderful to see him today, with the same wonderful smile as 20 years ago?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tomm is so inspiring!
