it had been stored away in the principal\u2019s office under a school policy that restricted students\u2019 access to medication.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2286\" data-end=\"2487\">The policy treated all prescription medication as items that needed to be locked away, without distinction for emergency lifesaving devices like asthma inhalers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2286\" data-end=\"2487\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yBWPznZqDr0?si=mbTrelDctvOh9Jti\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2489\" data-end=\"2661\">Ryan\u2019s friends saw him struggling and attempted to help, carrying him toward the office in hopes he could reach his inhaler in time.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2663\" data-end=\"2833\">Tragically, he collapsed before reaching the medication that might have opened his airways and allowed him to breathe and recover.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2835\" data-end=\"3026\">Ryan never regained consciousness and died as a result of his asthma attack, a loss that shocked not only his community but people across his province.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3028\" data-end=\"3221\">His death occurred in a context where emergency asthma medication was known to be critical, yet school policies prevented him from having it at his side.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3223\" data-end=\"3432\">Ryan\u2019s passing highlighted how some school health policies, while intended for safety, can unintentionally endanger children when they restrict access to emergency care.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3434\" data-end=\"3631\">Following the tragedy, Ryan\u2019s mother, Sandra Gibbons, became a vocal advocate for change, determined to prevent other\u00a0<a class=\"google-anno\" href=\"https:\/\/likya.org\/remembering-ryan-gibbons-a-life-lost-to-asthma\/#\" data-google-vignette=\"false\" data-google-interstitial=\"false\">\u00a0<span class=\"google-anno-t\">families<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from suffering a similar loss.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3434\" data-end=\"3631\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-29239 lzl-ed lzl-cached\" src=\"https:\/\/likya.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ryan1-600x540.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"540\" data-lzl-src=\"https:\/\/likya.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/ryan1-600x540.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Asthma, a chronic respiratory condition characterized by airway inflammation and constriction, can be frighteningly unpredictable and, in severe cases, fatal if not treated promptly and appropriately.
