His struggles began early<\/h2>\n

Born in New York City in the mid-1960s to a filmmaker father and an actress mother, he was introduced to the world of performance almost as soon as he could walk. Acting wasn\u2019t just a dream \u2014 it was part of his upbringing.<\/p>\n

He trained at a performing arts center as a teenager but ultimately dropped out of high school to chase his career full-time.<\/p>\n

Even though many believed he was destined for a brilliant career in entertainment, life behind the scenes was far more complicated. His struggles began early \u2014 much earlier than most people would expect.<\/p>\n

\u201dI passed him a joint. And suddenly I knew I had made a terrible, stupid mistake \u2026 giving a little kid a toke of grass just to be funny,\u201d the father\u00a0once<\/a>\u00a0shared.<\/p>\n

Over time, those moments created a confusing emotional bond. He once explained, \u201dWhen my dad and I used drugs together, it was his way of showing love for me in the only manner he knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the instability at home, he was already stepping into the spotlight. As a young boy, he appeared in small roles in his father\u2019s films, making his acting debut at just five years old. By the time he was seven, he had already taken on another role, showing early signs of the career that would later define him.<\/p>\n

Hyperactive kid<\/h2>\n

He also spent time training at a prestigious summer acting camp in upstate New York, sharpening his skills from a young age.<\/p>\n

In school, he was known as a hyperactive kid who tried hard to fit in \u2014 often getting teased by older students, yet still managing to be popular among his peers. But his family life soon took another turn when his parents divorced while he was still young. He moved to New York City with his mother, while his sister stayed with their father.<\/p>\n

As he got older, his path became less structured. He attended multiple schools but eventually dropped out as a teenager, deciding to fully commit to acting.<\/p>\n

It was a bold move \u2014 one that would set the stage for everything that followed.<\/p>\n

By the late 1980s and early \u201990s, he had firmly established himself as one of Hollywood\u2019s rising stars. His breakout came through a series of teen films alongside the Brat Pack, including\u00a0Weird Science<\/em>\u00a0(1985) and\u00a0Less Than Zero<\/em>\u00a0(1987), which helped put him on the map.<\/p>\n

Despite landing roles and gaining attention, the fan-favorite\u2019s personal life became increasingly chaotic. His relationship with actress Sarah Jessica Parker lasted for several years, but even she couldn\u2019t pull him away from his destructive habits.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople around him would be dismissive of me, but I had given him stability and tried to create a steady heartbeat that allowed him to show up on time,\u201d Parker\u00a0told\u00a0The New Yorker<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

The 1996 arrest<\/h2>\n

Unlike him, Parker stayed away from drugs and rarely drank alcohol \u2014 making her almost the complete opposite of her then-boyfriend, the rising Hollywood star.<\/p>\n

But eventually, the relationship ended, and his addiction worsened.<\/p>\n

By the mid-1990s, his life had taken a dramatic turn. Arrests, court appearances, and rehab stays became part of his reality.<\/p>\n

In 1996, the actor was arrested by police. According to reports, he was pulled over in Malibu for speeding, after allegedly driving erratically and appearing to be under the influence.<\/p>\n

During the stop, authorities reportedly discovered \u201cblack tar heroin, crack and powdered cocaine and an unloaded .357 Magnum handgun in his pickup truck.\u201d<\/p>\n

In one particularly bizarre incident, he was arrested after wandering into a stranger\u2019s home, stripping down to his underwear, and falling asleep in a bed.<\/p>\n

Even then, things didn\u2019t immediately improve. He later admitted just how dangerous that period of his life had become, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201dI would never tell you the worst things that have happened to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

His legal troubles escalated, eventually landing him behind bars. Reflecting on that time, he described prison as:<\/p>\n

\u201c[It was the] most dangerous place I\u2019ve ever been in my life. Nobody is designated. If they\u2019re a level 1, 2, 3 or 4 criminal, [everyone is there].\u201d<\/p>\n

Challenges as a father<\/h2>\n

After his release in 2000, the road to recovery wasn\u2019t instant. There were setbacks, more struggles, and moments where it seemed like he might not make it back. But something eventually changed.<\/p>\n

By 2003, he had managed to get sober \u2014 a turning point that would redefine his life. Not long after, he rebuilt both his personal and professional worlds.<\/p>\n

He remarried, welcomed more children, and slowly regained Hollywood\u2019s trust. His focus shifted toward family, stability, and a second chance at the career he had nearly lost.<\/p>\n

He also faced challenges as a father, particularly when his eldest son struggled with addiction \u2014 a painful echo of his own past. When his son was arrested, he expressed hope for a different outcome, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201dWe\u2019re grateful to the Sheriff\u2019s Department for their intervention and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale.\u201d<\/p>\n
