Police officers had responded to the Walmart parking lot in Omaha, Nebraska, just after 9.10 AM, as it was reported that a woman armed with a \u201clarge kitchen knife\u201d had taken a young child.<\/p>\n<p>The woman, identified as 31-year-old 31-year-old Noemi Guzman, was seen taking out the knife while she pulled a shopping cart with a three-year-old boy sitting inside it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Guzman was making multiple threats with the knife. Officers gave multiple verbal commands for Ms. Guzman to drop the knife. She refused to drop the weapon and cut the boy,\u201d the police wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two patrol officers fired their service weapons striking Ms. Guzman. The child\u2019s guardian, along with a bystander, immediately removed the child from the cart and rendered aid to him. Officers began lifesaving measures on Ms. Guzman; however, she was pronounced dead at the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-woman-shot-dead-by-police-after-approaching-child-in-shopping-cart\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Woman shot dead by police after approaching child in shopping cart<\/h2>\n<p>The little boy was rapidly taken to a children\u2019s hospital by the Omaha Fire Department for medical treatment. Luckily, the boy\u2019s injuries were not considered life-threatening.<\/p>\n<p>After watching store surveillance footage, investigators determined that Noemi Guzman had shoplifted the knife from inside the store. She then approached the child and its guardian in a shopping aisle, showing them the knife, and forced the person to \u201cwalk ahead of the cart while the child remained inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Guzman directed them through the store and into the parking lot. Officers arrived shortly after Ms. Guzman, the guardian, and child exited the store and began walking east toward the parking lot entrance,\u201d the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OmahaPoliceDepartment\/posts\/pfbid02dXE1e6zVk2Kcm7AfQtw6QDAPethyxMd4eYcrx7zTyX8SBtcvzJuNTnWQ11rMofwbl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Facebook post<\/a>\u00a0further read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe responding officers acted with professionalism and direct action to intervene and save a child\u2019s life,\u201d Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said. \u201cThe community can be reassured in knowing that Omaha police officers stand ready to act with courage and decisiveness in the most serious situations to protect the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-police-officers-praised-by-omaha-mayor\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Police officers praised by Omaha Mayor<\/h2>\n<p>Omaha Mayor John W. Ewing Jr. has given his gratitude to the police officers for their quick actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am grateful for the department\u2019s professionalism and transparency,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Police say the investigation remains ongoing. Meanwhile, they added, \u201cThe Omaha Police Department offers its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Guzman during this difficult time,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, a Walmart spokesperson, per\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/woman-shot-dead-after-trying-to-kidnap-toddler-in-supermarket-and-attacking-him-with-a-knife-13531935\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sky<\/a>, said: \u201cViolence like this is unacceptable.\u201d The company confirmed it is cooperating with the investigation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Omaha Police Department is asking any independent witnesses who may have observed or recorded any actions of Ms. Guzman during this incident to please contact the department directly at 402-444-4877.
