But for some people, it can quietly linger, and that\u2019s where the risk comes in.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-hpv\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is HPV?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Mayo Clinic, \u201csome types of genital HPV can cause cancer of the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina, called the cervix. Other types of cancers have been linked to HPV infection. These include cancers of the anus, penis, vagina, vulva and back of the throat. Cancer at the back of the throat is called oropharyngeal cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Actor\u00a0<a id=\"24103\" href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/michael-douglas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" type=\"post_tag\">Michael Douglas<\/a>\u00a0opened up about his stage four throat cancer diagnosis in 2010, later suggesting it may have been linked to oral sex. He did, however, also pointed to other risk factors such as smoking and drinking.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say men are more affected than women. In the UK, around two in three new HPV-related head and neck cancer cases are diagnosed in men, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vt.co\/lifestyle\/health\/hpv-throat-cancer-is-rising-men-oral-sex?fbclid=IwY2xjawRMaSNleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETBXd0tob2NpcjBZS04zOHBMc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHugADqGrGNHreEYtKIGgfZ2LpDQ17MBdCfuBp-v8RZfYbLB_tU5TLif8cxcQ_aem_0WPUBFVOKnT7SgQMC_M-3w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">VT.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-hpv-vaccine\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The HPV vaccine<\/h2>\n<p>Karis Betts, cancer epidemiologist at Cancer Research UK, says one of the challenges is how long the virus can go unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can take decades\u201d for HPV to show up, she told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ladbible.com\/news\/health\/hpv-throat-cancer-oral-sex-men-michael-douglas-369196-20251117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">LADbible.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are studies that look at risk for different people. Straight women who have sex with men have a higher risk than women who have sex exclusively with women. And men who have sex with men have higher risk than straight men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe HPV vaccine is also available up to age 40 for men who have sex with men because the risk is slightly higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen have higher rates of head and neck cancers than women. This kind of historically links to other risk factors as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you look a few decades ago, there were really high rates of smoking in men, high rates of alcohol, and they\u2019ve consistently been higher than women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen have higher rates of head and neck cancers, particularly in the mouth and throat, and these cancers are also caused by other things that are more prevalent in men.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-smoking-and-alcohol-far-more-likely-to-cause-cancer\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smoking and alcohol far more likely to cause cancer<\/h2>\n<p>She also said that: \u201cSmoking and alcohol are going to be much bigger drivers of head and neck cancers than HPV\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CDC, \u201cHPV is most commonly spread during vaginal or anal sex. It also spreads through close skin-to-skin touching during sex. A person with HPV can pass the infection to someone even when they have no signs or symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to prevention, Betts says the focus should be on vaccination and routine screening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big kind of preventable measures against HPV in the population are vaccination and cervical screening,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVaccines kind of work best, and that\u2019s why they work best at that school age, because it\u2019s before people have had any exposure to the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people are worried about their cancer risk, the best things that they can do, especially for head and neck cancer, is to not smoke, or stop smoking, and reduce their alcohol intake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings like that will have a much bigger benefit on your cancer risk than kind of worrying about an HPV infection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She also pushed back on a common misconception around prevention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe advice isn\u2019t going to be stop having sex,\u201d Betts said, adding: \u201cPeople should live and enjoy their lives, and sex is part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An expert is shedding light on why men are far more likely to develop HPV-related throat cancers.
