A short time later, he heard a gunshot and followed the disturbing sound to a nearby home.<\/p>\n<p>When the family found Bootsy, they said the scene awaiting them was horrifying.<\/p>\n<p>Garrett\u2019s best friend had been\u00a0<a id=\"1322\" href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/crime\/\" type=\"post_tag\">shot<\/a>\u00a0at close range and killed.<\/p>\n<p>According to Matt, three people were standing near the dead pig wearing aprons and gloves, with a pot of boiling hot water nearby. The family believes the group was preparing to butcher the animal for food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a rope with blood on it beside her body,\u201d Matt told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsbtv.com\/news\/local\/why-would-you-do-this-boy-mourns-therapy-pig-killed-by-neighbors-east-georgia\/IH4INZB2QJH5ZMMGKZUBV2W2MM\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">WSB-TV<\/a>, adding he believe that Bootsy had been \u201crestrained\u201d before she was shot.<\/p>\n<p>Kerrie said she also confronted the people immediately after her husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I told her, \u2018Why would you do this? You knew she was our pig,\u2019\u201d Kerrie said. \u201cAnd she laughed at me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-intentional-slaughter-of-innocent-bootsy\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intentional slaughter of innocent Bootsy<\/h2>\n<p>After, the family pushed for criminal charges. Authorities have now arrested three people in connection with the case.<\/p>\n<p>Officials confirmed that 54-year-old Mai Kia Vang-Moua, 59-year-old Maysy Moua, and 33-year-old Kee Moua are facing aggravated animal cruelty charges after investigators looked into the pig\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Despite claims from the suspects that the animal was mistaken for a wild pig, the family pointed out that Bootsy was wearing a bright orange livestock ear tag at the time of her death.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is someone who had purpose in what they were doing,\u201d Kerrie told WSB-TV.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-feels-like-a-bad-dream\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Feels like a bad dream\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Even with arrests made in the case, the Cox family says they are still struggling to process the violent way Bootsy was taken from them and the emotional toll it has had on Garrett.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were shattered by the loss of our son\u2019s beloved pet pig, Bootsy. Losing a pet is always painful, but the way we lost Bootsy is something we are still struggling to comprehend,\u201d Kerrie shared in a May 8\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=27297743703154266&amp;set=pb.100000360120324.-2207520000&amp;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Facebook post<\/a>. \u201cGarrett keeps saying it feels like a bad dream \u2013that he\u2019s going to wake up and see Bootsy waiting for him, just like she always did. Bootsy was more than a pet to the family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Garrett, the loss of Bootsy has been devastating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI miss her so much,\u201d he told WSB-TV, adding, \u201cShe made me very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family has since buried Bootsy near the barn where she spent much of her time with Garrett.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you think tougher penalties should exist for cases involving animal cruelty like this one?
