Why would you throw a rock at it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe told him that we called the cops, and he was like, \u2018I don\u2019t care. Brenton Awa, who later revealed that the anonymous local had even received a special recognition from lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of us have seen environmental activists [sic], I like to call them, who took matters into his own hands to educate what might happen when you mess with our lands or the animals,\u201d\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/2241980609670711\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/2241980609670711\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" type=\"link\">Awa said<\/a>\u00a0during a state meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur attorney over here wants to make it clear we don\u2019t condone violence, but we did make a letter of recognition for Mr. Ambassador of Aloha.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-lani-we-have-your-back\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Lani, we have your back\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Maui Mayor Richard Bissen also weighed in on the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLani is not just a seal to us,\u201d\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1535799198075571\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1535799198075571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" type=\"link\">Bissen shared<\/a>\u00a0about the mammal, \u201cocean family,\u201d who has been a treasured symbol of recovery since she returned to Lahaina following the 2023 wildfires. \u201cShe is part of our ocean, \u2018ohana\u2019 in Lahaina. Many of our residents know her, watch over her and care deeply about her well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me be clear, this is not the kind of visitor we welcome on Maui. We welcome respectful visitors that understand that our cultural environment and wildlife must be treated with care and aloha. Behavior like this will not be tolerated,\u201d Bissen said, vowing to pursue justice against the man involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLani, we have your back.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-suspect\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The suspect<\/h2>\n<p>According to the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), the tourist \u2013 identified as Ukrainian businessman Igor Lytvynchuk \u2013 was questioned by authorities after the attack on the seal but was eventually released after requesting legal counsel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this time, the alleged suspect has not been criminally charged,\u201d but the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dlnr.hawaii.gov\/blog\/2026\/05\/06\/nr26-59\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">DLNR<\/a>\u00a0reports that \u201cin accordance with the federal MMPA,\u201d the incident is being reviewed for \u201cfurther review and action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>We don\u2019t condone violence either but we\u2019re happy that the unnamed local is being rewarded for defending Lani!
