Benedetti\u2019s body was discovered shortly after the incident on May 14, while the other four divers were found days later.<\/p>\n<p>The group is believed to have been exploring a cave system at a depth of around 50 meters (160 feet). According to ABC News, the legal recreational diving limit in the Maldives is 30 meters (98 feet).<\/p>\n<p>Now, former\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/army\/\">military diver<\/a>\u00a0Shafraz Naeem has spoken publicly about the risks involved in the dive and questioned why it was allowed to happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve done at least 50 dives in the Alimatha caves, taking the right precautions and using the right equipment,\u201d Naeem\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilgiornale.it\/news\/politica\/sospetto-dellesperto-dellisola-temo-che-non-fossero-2665683.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0Italian outlet\u00a0<em>Il Giornale<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was \u201calways aware\u201d of the extreme dangers involved in dives at those depths and stressed that \u201cexpertise and precaution are necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naeem then directly questioned how the group had been permitted to carry out the expedition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone knows the rules were broken; they didn\u2019t even have a permit to conduct research at those depths,\u201d he told\u00a0<em>Il Giornale<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-193424\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/05\/19074049\/shutterstock_2456421349.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/05\/19074049\/shutterstock_2456421349.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2026\/05\/19074049\/shutterstock_2456421349-768x512.jpg 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shutterstock.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Reports state that the cave reaches depths of around 70 meters (230 feet) and stretches roughly 200 meters in length.<\/p>\n<p>Naeem also claimed that conditions inside the cave would challenge \u201ceven the most experienced divers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the exact cause of death remains under investigation, he warned that at such depths, a single mistake or complication can quickly become fatal.<\/p>\n<p>According to Naeem, just one \u201cunexpected event can quickly turn into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/accident\/\">tragedy<\/a>\u201d during a deep dive like this.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/news\/world-news\/ex-military-diver-claims-rules-were-broken-maldives-dive-783016-20260518?fbclid=IwY2xjawR47wFleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFaWWFmS3FJN3EwR2JpUnp0c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHjN-9PfPvhI7-NeGfK-D5h9bAbr1T3dZ-RoO3bPEgsH4CRvDxYgMKkQVlHAk_aem_yWiFo8B6bDC9EfiOnnY9FA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0it would be \u201cirresponsible\u201d to speculate on exactly what happened before the investigation is complete.<\/p>\n<p>The tragedy also claimed the life of rescue diver Sergeant Major Mohammed Mahudhee, who died from decompression sickness on May 16 while searching for the missing group.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities in the Maldives have now launched an official investigation into why the divers went beyond the permitted depth limit.<\/p>\n<p>Chief government spokesman Mohamed Hussain Shareef addressed the incident publicly, saying, \u201cFor recreational and commercial diving, by law, nobody is allowed to go further than 30 meters, and unfortunately, this appears to have happened a lot deeper because even the cave\u2019s mouth is almost 50 meters under.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/tourist\/\">Italian tour operator<\/a>\u00a0linked to the diving trip denied authorizing or knowing about the dive that allegedly violated local regulations.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company\u2019s lawyer, who spoke to Italian newspaper\u00a0<em>Corriere della Sera<\/em>, the operator was unaware the group intended to descend beyond the legal limit.<\/p>\n<p>Following the incident, the operating licence of the liveaboard vessel\u00a0<em>MV Duke of York<\/em>\u00a0has reportedly been suspended indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Share this with others who are keeping up with the Maldives diving tragedy which claims 5 lives.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former military diver has claimed that \u201crules weren\u2019t followed\u201d during the scuba diving expedition in the Maldives that left five people dead.
