Their findings pointed to a devastating mistake: traces of hazelnuts and almonds were present in the milkshake Mia had consumed.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation uncovered CCTV footage showing that the caf\u00e9\u2019s operator, Baris Yucel, 47, failed to clean the blender before preparing Mia\u2019s drink. Residue from a previous milkshake, containing tree nuts, remained in the machine, ultimately causing a severe allergic reaction that led to her tragic death.<\/p>\n<p>Southwark Council argued that this lack of basic food safety measures directly contributed to Mia\u2019s passing \u2013 a tragedy that could have been avoided.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1530183088\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\">\n<div id=\"ad-modul_intext_163326_1\" class=\"ad-space\" data-google-query-id=\"CPf3lJT9m4sDFWI3RAgdB-ArJQ\">\n<p>On December 2, 2024, at Croydon Magistrates\u2019 Court, Yucel pleaded guilty to all six criminal charges brought against him, including failure to provide allergen information for customers, failure to prevent cross-contamination during\u00a0food\u00a0preparation and serving food containing an undisclosed allergen \u2013 a mistake that proved fatal.<\/p>\n<p>Your Local Guardian\u00a0reports that Yucel has \u201cshown genuine remorse,\u201d and \u201chas had to live with the consequences (of) what happened.\u201d His lawyer adds that \u201ca day does not go by when he does not think about the child and her family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On January 24, 2025, the court fined the\u00a0caf\u00e9\u00a0owner $23,000 US and sentenced him to 100 hours of community service.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-food-safety\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Food safety<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Leigh Day Law Firm, the lawyers representing the St. Hilaire family, writes in a release that \u201cno outcome will ever make up for the loss [the family] have suffered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMia and all other children with allergies should be able to feel safe knowing that businesses serving food and drink adhere to food safety legislation put in place to protect their lives. But unfortunately, far too often we see that this doesn\u2019t happen, which can have tragic consequences such as in this case,\u201d the law firm shared.<\/p>\n<p>While this penalty highlights the legal consequences of neglecting food safety regulations, for Mia\u2019s family, no punishment can undo their devastating loss.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fmylondonsouth%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02cuoxGrgk6Wivxsgqid4F42wZFiuZTFQzymG2ZNjyRgiMkajdN5Am4QiPWgJGqygal&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In a statement shared on the lawyer\u2019s website, the\u00a0grieving parents\u00a0\u2013 Adrian and Chanel \u2013 said, \u201cWe think of Mia every day and knowing her death could potentially have been prevented so simply, only adds to how heartbroken we are as a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The message continues, \u201cWe hope this conviction and fine sends a loud message to businesses serving food and drinks across the country, of the devastating consequences of failing to take food safety seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1080702873\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\">\n<div id=\"ad-modul_intext_163326_2\" class=\"ad-space\" data-google-query-id=\"CLq6sK_9m4sDFc6G7gEdFXkS5Q\">\n<p>Since Mia\u2019s death, an enforcement officer from the council has made several visits to the cafe to ensure procedures to prevent a similar incident are being maintained.<\/p>\n<p>An inquest into Mia\u2019s death is set to take place soon, aiming to provide more insight into what went wrong and how such incidents can be prevented in the future.<\/p>\n<p>This case raises serious questions about the accountability of food establishments when it comes to allergen management.
