A heavily tattooed woman recently vented online about TJ Maxx rejecting her for a retail position in one of its stores. Instead of offering their support, the online community gave her a dose of reality, suggesting that \u201cfacial piercings and tattoos\u201d are \u201ccareer enders,\u201d making her \u201cunemployable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ash Putnam, who goes by the online handle ashxobrien, recently went on TikTok and complained that TJ Maxx rejected her for a job in retail.<\/p>\n
\u201cI applied to TJ Maxx a few weeks ago and they denied my application,\u201d the 24-year-old started in the TikTok clip that was viewed more than 7 million times. \u201cThey couldn\u2019t even call me. They just sent me some automated email.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking for some clarity, Putnam \u2013 who has visible tattoos covering her face and body, along with numerous facial piercings \u2013 said she decided to confront the hiring manager.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, I went in today, and I was like, \u2018What was the reason I didn\u2019t get hired?\u2019 And she was like, \u2018Oh, you just don\u2019t have enough experience. There [were] candidates with more experience than you,\u2019\u201d explains the young woman.<\/p>\n
\u201cI asked her if it was because of my tattoos. Obviously, a lot of places don\u2019t like tattoos. She said that [it] wasn\u2019t the reason. I don\u2019t feel like that\u2019s true, but whatever. I\u2019ll leave it at that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u2018Doesn\u2019t make sense\u2019
\nHoping to get some insight from the online audience, Putnam asks in her video, \u201cI\u2019m just wondering how teenagers and young adults who haven\u2019t had a job before are supposed to get employed.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow are they supposed to get a job if these places are only hiring people based on experience? It just doesn\u2019t make any sense to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before ending her clip, she asked her followers to share their experiences and any obstacles they may have experienced when looking for work.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to see if I\u2019m the only person experiencing this right now. I hate that my tattoos have been such a defining factor for me getting a job or not,\u201d Putnam added. \u201cJust because I have tattoos doesn\u2019t mean that I\u2019m not going to be a good worker.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[You] can be a bartender, tattoo artist, an extra in a prison movie, bassist for Motley Crue,\u201d jokes a second TikToker, while a third simply writes: \u201cUnemployable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Others suggested it\u2019s the placement of Putnam\u2019s tattoos and not the actual body art. \u201cThere\u2019s a reason that tattoo artists refer to face tattoos as career enders,\u201d writes one user.<\/p>\n
