But size and symmetry did not appear to be crucial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Researchers also discovered there were &#8216;significant differences&#8217; across each race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Among white women, the ideal shape saw the nipple placed slightly lower on the chest and pointing upwards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Yet, those rated highly among Black and Asian women were more likely to have &#8216;straight&#8217; nipples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Experts today said the results showed\u00a0beauty ideals are not &#8216;one-size-fits-all&#8217; and suggested they could be\u00a0useful for plastic surgeons performing breast augmentations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<div class=\"image-wrap fff-pic\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-1e7a565a93dc60b0\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2025\/02\/14\/13\/95214123-14397733-image-a-9_1739538060439.jpg\" alt=\"According to US scientists, who used AI to generate 150 images, those that were moderately sized and had more volume in the area above the nipples \u00bf called 'upper pole fullness'\" width=\"634\" height=\"423\" data-gallery-handler-attached=\"true\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Dr\u00a0Aaron Lee Wiegmann, chief plastic and reconstructive surgery resident physician at Rush University Medical Center in\u00a0<span data-track-module=\"internal-body-link\">Chicago<\/span>, said:\u00a0&#8216;As an aesthetic surgeon, I am fascinated by what humans perceive as aesthetic ideals of the human form \u2014 be it face, breast, or body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;After all, this is what we attempt to achieve with surgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Much of the plastic surgery literature has been focused on what is aesthetically ideal in the Caucasian population, however, I believe that there are many racial nuances that may vary between different racial groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;AI has immense potential to help patients determine what their goals are for breast enhancement surgery.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, he also warned patients to be aware of &#8216;nefarious surgeons&#8217; who could use AI-generated photos to &#8216;show potentially unrealistic results leading to inflated patient expectations&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In the study, the researchers used the prompt: &#8216;A topless Caucasian [white] woman with perfect aesthetically ideal breasts standing in three-quarter profile view&#8217; to gather photos on the unnamed AI image-generator platform.<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<div class=\"image-wrap fff-pic\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-c4f70393e894a5f5\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2025\/02\/14\/12\/95213329-14397733-image-a-8_1739535715975.jpg\" alt=\"Caucasian breasts had a mean ratio of 45.8\/54.2. The nipple also pointed slightly upwards at 21.5\u00b0\" width=\"634\" height=\"175\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">This was then modified to obtain images of Black and Asian women and using the prompts &#8216;African American&#8217; and &#8216;Asian&#8217;. The search was repeated to obtain &#8216;frontal view&#8217; photos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">They then selected 25 images from each of the three racial groups for both the three-quarter profile and frontal views, resulting in 150 images for analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Using image editing software, the researchers then measured each image to assess breast shape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Writing in\u00a0Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum, the scientists said white breasts most closely followed the 45\/55 rule \u2014 often cited in studies as the formula for a perfectly proportioned breast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It means\u00a0that 55 per cent of the breast volume is in the lower pole, below the nipple line, and 45 per cent in the upper pole, above the nipple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Caucasian breasts had a mean ratio of 45.8\/54.2. The nipple also pointed slightly upwards at\u00a021.5\u00b0.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In contrast,\u00a0African American women had a mean ratio of 51.4\/48.6 and nipple angle of 10.9\u00b0.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Asian women, meanwhile, recorded a\u00a0mean ratio of 52.7\/47.3 and nipple angle of 10.5\u00b0.<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<div class=\"image-wrap fff-pic\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-e2d9fd0f64ac4107\" class=\"blkBorder img-share\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2025\/02\/14\/13\/95214147-14397733-Writing_in_Aesthetic_Surgery_Journal_Open_Forum_the_scientists_s-a-11_1739538557686.jpg\" alt=\"Writing in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum , the scientists said white breasts most closely followed the 45\/55 rule \u00bf often cited in studies as the formula for a perfectly proportioned breast\" width=\"634\" height=\"391\" data-gallery-handler-attached=\"true\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Black breasts also had larger nipple-areolar complexes (NAC) \u2014 the pigmented area of the breast that includes the nipple and areola \u2014 compared to white breasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The scientists added: &#8216;Largely, the females were found to have attractively thin and athletic builds, but occasionally had unrealistically muscular body tones.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, they acknowledged the study had &#8216;several limitations&#8217; including not being able to control factors\u00a0like lighting and exact pose in the AI-generated images.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It was also not known exactly how the AI models were trained, they added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Therefore, we are\u00a0not able to assess any biases present in their respective datasets.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Roughly 10,000 women undergo cosmetic breast surgery every year in the UK according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, aiming to enhance their appearance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">In the US, the figure stands closer to 700,000 the study&#8217;s researchers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Ahead of this many go for aesthetic or reconstructive surgery consultations to help them talk over with an expert what changes they want to their breasts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Breasts can naturally change shape during a woman&#8217;s monthly cycle due to fluctuations in hormones.
