Another\u00a0coronavirus<\/span>\u00a0feared to be powerful enough to spread through humans has been discovered in\u00a0China<\/span>.<\/p>\n

In scenes eerily reminiscent of the beginnings of Covid, researchers\u00a0at the infamous Wuhan Institute of Virology<\/span>\u00a0detected the new strain living within bats.<\/p>\n

HKU5-CoV-2 is strikingly similar to the pandemic virus, sparking fears that history could repeat itself just two years after the worst was declared over.<\/p>\n

The new virus is even closer related to MERS, a deadlier type of coronavirus that kills up to a third of people it infects.<\/p>\n

Virologist Shi Zhengli, known as ‘Batwoman’ for her work on coronaviruses, led the discovery, published in a top scientific journal.<\/p>\n

Tests showed HKU5-CoV-2 infiltrated human cells in the same way as SARS-CoV-2, the virus behind Covid.<\/p>\n

Sharing their discovery in the journal Cell, the Beijing-funded researchers admitted it posed a ‘high risk of spillover to humans, either through direct transmission or facilitated by intermediate hosts.’<\/p>\n

MERS is a contagious respiratory illness spread from animals to humans and from human to human. It causes fever, cough, shortness of breath, diarrhea and vomiting, and can be fatal in severe cases.<\/p>\n

Only two patients in the US have ever tested positive for MERS – both in May 2014 -and each case was linked to travel from the Middle East. There is no vaccine against the virus.<\/p>\n

The new HKU5-CoV-2 is a coronavirus belonging to the merbecovirus family of pathogens.<\/p>\n

Merbecoviruses have been detected in minks and pangolins – the animal believed to be the intermediary for Covid between bats and humans.<\/p>\n

This, the scientists wrote, ‘suggests frequent cross-species transmission of these viruses between bats and other animal species.’<\/p>\n

They added: ‘This study reveals a distinct lineage of HKU5-CoVs in bats that efficiently use human [cells] and underscores their potential zoonotic risk.’<\/p>\n

HKU5-CoV viruses were first detected in bats in 2006, but the new data suggests HKU5-CoV-2 has a ‘higher potential for interspecies infection’ than others.<\/p>\n

However, the potential for HKU5-CoV-2 to spill over to humans ‘remains to be investigated.’<\/p>\n

The research was conducted by the\u00a0Wuhan<\/span>\u00a0Institute of Virology, which is at the center of the lab-leak theory, which claims\u00a0Covid-19 was manufactured in a Chinese lab<\/span>\u00a0and accidentally leaked to the public.<\/p>\n

The newest study states a zoonotic spillover is believed to be responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic as bats have the highest proportion of coronaviruses and are considered reservoirs for them.<\/p>\n

But the intelligence community in the US believes, with low confidence, that Covid leaked from the WIV.<\/p>\n

While SARS and MERS have documented evidence of transmission between animals to humans, the ‘intermediate hosts for SARS-CoV-2 remain unclear’, the new study says.<\/p>\n
