\u201cTime is the one thing you don\u2019t have, sweetheart,\u201d the man sneered. He pulled out a gun and aimed it at her. \u201cPeople who owe Mr. Marco don\u2019t live long. They end up feeding the fish\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard froze in place, his heart pounding.<\/p>\n

After a tense moment, the man sighed and tucked the gun back into his waistband. \u201cSearch the house,\u201d he ordered. \u201cSee if she has anything valuable we can take.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the men rummaged through the house, Deidre collapsed onto the floor, sobbing. Richard clenched his fists. His daughter was in serious trouble, and he had to do something.<\/p>\n

A Desperate Gamble<\/h3>\n

Richard followed the men as they loaded stolen appliances into their car and drove away. He tailed them to a shady two-story brick building downtown, which looked like an old bar.<\/p>\n

Taking a deep breath, Richard stepped inside.<\/p>\n

A group of men sat around a large table, and one of them, a well-dressed man with a deep scar above his left eye, stood up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re closed,\u201d he growled. \u201cCome back later.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m here about Deidre\u2019s debt,\u201d Richard said firmly.<\/p>\n

The scarred man smirked. \u201cA Good Samaritan, huh? She borrowed $80,000 for her business, promising to repay with her profits. But she never made a dime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard swallowed hard. \u201cI have $20,000 in savings.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man laughed. \u201cThat\u2019s only a fraction of what she owes. But there is something you can do to make up the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard tensed. \u201cWhat do you need me to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man leaned forward. \u201cWe\u2019ve been having trouble moving some\u2026 \u2018merchandise\u2019 across the Canadian border. A kind-looking old man like you wouldn\u2019t raise suspicion. Drive one of our cars across the border, and we\u2019ll consider the debt settled.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard had no choice. He agreed.<\/p>\n

The Escape<\/h3>\n

That night, Richard drove the car toward the border. He stopped at a gas station, only to hear a police dog barking aggressively from a patrol car.<\/p>\n

Something was inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Panic surged through him. He jumped back into the car and sped off, weaving through traffic as sirens blared behind him. He turned onto a dirt road, but his path led to a narrow ledge above a river.<\/p>\n

The car slipped. The nose tipped forward. Water rushed over the hood.<\/p>\n

Richard took a deep breath and pushed the door open against the pressure of the rising water. Kicking hard, he swam toward the surface, gasping for air as he reached the riverbank.<\/p>\n

He had escaped, but he wasn\u2019t safe yet.<\/p>\n

A Father\u2019s Sacrifice<\/h3>\n

Richard hitchhiked home and went straight to the bank. \u201cI need to mortgage my house,\u201d he told the banker. \u201cAnd I need the money fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later that day, he returned to the club with a bag full of cash. As he entered, Deidre ran toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDad, wait! You\u2019re not facing them alone. I don\u2019t know how you found out about my debt, but I\u2019m standing with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

They walked inside together.<\/p>\n

Richard placed the bag on the table. \u201cHere\u2019s $80,000\u2014plus $15,000 for the car I lost in the river.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Marco\u2019s face twisted in anger. \u201cYou think $15,000 covers a shipment worth $100,000? That doesn\u2019t even begin to pay for what you owe.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pulled out his gun and aimed it at Deidre.<\/p>\n

Richard stepped in front of her. \u201cNo! Take me instead!\u201d<\/p>\n

Before Mr. Marco could pull the trigger, sirens blared outside. Police stormed the building, guns drawn. Mr. Marco tried to flee, but he was caught.<\/p>\n

Richard and Deidre were safe.<\/p>\n

A Second Chance<\/h3>\n

As they sat in the back of an ambulance, Richard held Deidre\u2019s hands. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you come to me for help?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears welled in her eyes. \u201cI didn\u2019t want you to think I was a failure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard cupped her face gently. \u201cYou\u2019re not a failure. You took a risk, and it didn\u2019t work out. But you should\u2019ve trusted me to help you. I lost your mother\u2014I can\u2019t lose you, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deidre broke down in his arms. \u201cI love you, Dad. I\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay, sweetheart,\u201d Richard whispered. \u201cEverything will be okay.\u201d<\/p>\n
