My husband\u2019s death broke me. However, my mother-in-law made things worse two days after his death. She changed the locks, evicted my children and myself, and left us without a place to live. Though she was unaware that she was committing the biggest mistake of her life, she believed she had won.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t gullible about Ryan\u2019s mother when I married him two years ago. Margaret never bothered to conceal her contempt for me; whenever I walked into a room, her eyes would always narrow a little, as though I had brought a foul odor with me.<\/p>\n

Ryan would squeeze my hand beneath the dining table and whisper,\u00a0\u201cShe\u2019ll come around, Cat,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>while his mother questioned him\u2014and him alone\u2014about his day in a direct manner.<\/p>\n

However, she never showed up. Not to me, and definitely not to my children from my former marriage, Liam (7) and Emma (5).<\/p>\n

I heard her conversing with her buddy in the kitchen over a Sunday meal at her place.<\/p>\n

She muttered,\u00a0\u201cThe children aren\u2019t even his,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0not realizing that I was coming with empty plates.\u00a0\u201cShe trapped him with her ready-made family. Classic gold-digger move.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Plates shook in my hands as I froze in the corridor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nI was crying when I confronted Ryan that evening.\u00a0\u201cYour mother thinks I married you for money. She doesn\u2019t even see Emma and Liam as your family.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nA muscle in Ryan\u2019s face worked to tighten his jaw.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll talk to her. I promise this stops now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

His heartbeat was steady against my ear as he drew me in.\u00a0\u201cYou and those kids are my world, Cat. Nothing and no one will come between us. Not even my mother.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ryan kept his promise. He purchased a lovely house for us in a community with tree-lined streets and nice schools, far enough away from Margaret that we didn\u2019t have to visit her unless we so desired.<\/p>\n

Under Ryan\u2019s tutelage, Emma and Liam flourished. Since their biological father left when Liam was still in diapers, he has never attempted to take his place. Rather, he developed his own bond with them, based on bedtime stories, Saturday morning pancakes, and pillow forts.<\/p>\n

I remarked,\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019re doing the tucking in tonight,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as I leaned against Emma\u2019s room\u2019s doorframe and observed Ryan carefully placing her stuffed animals around her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Whiskers always goes on the left,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Emma said gravely.<\/p>\n

Ryan nodded gravely.\u00a0\u201cOf course,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>he said.\u00a0\u201cHe\u2019s the guardian of the left side of the bed. Very important position.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ryan later put his arm over my shoulders and sat down with me on the couch after both children had fallen asleep.<\/p>\n

\u201cI spoke with Mom today,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he muttered.<\/p>\n

I stiffened.\u00a0\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

His tone was regretful but firm:\u00a0\u201cI told her she either respects my family \u2014 all of my family \u2014 or she doesn\u2019t see me at all.\u201d \u201cI think she got the message.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

My head was resting on his shoulder.\u00a0\u201cI hate that you had to do that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He corrected me, saying,\u00a0\u201cI chose to. There\u2019s a difference.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Margaret remained at a distance for some time. She managed to be polite to me, sent birthday cards to the children, and arrived at Christmas with clumsily selected presents. Although it wasn\u2019t warm, it was bearable.<\/p>\n

The phone call that broke everything then arrived.<\/p>\n

My phone rang when I was cutting vegetables for supper. At the kitchen table, the children were working on their schoolwork while amicably debating who had more arithmetic issues.<\/p>\n

A voice from out of the blue said,\u00a0\u201cIs this Ms. Catherine?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m calling from the hospital downtown. Your husband has been in an accident.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The blade clanked against the countertop.\u00a0\u201cWhat kind of accident?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The silence went on forever.\u00a0\u201cA car crash. It\u2019s serious, ma\u2019am. You should come right away.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The drive to the hospital is not something I recall. I don\u2019t recall requesting that my neighbor watch the children. All I can recall is the look on the doctor\u2019s face as he came up to me in the waiting area and how I could tell before he spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very sorry. We did everything we could,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he replied.<\/p>\n

It seemed as though my heart would cease beating. Ryan had left. The one man who had ever loved me with all his heart and treated my kids like his own\u2026 disappeared.<\/p>\n

My voice sounded distant, as if it were someone else\u2019s.\u00a0\u201cCan I see him?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a nod, the doctor ushered me along an apparently endless hallway.<\/p>\n

With the exception of the silence, Ryan appeared content, nearly sleeping. His chest did not rise and fall. No eyelids fluttering. Nothing but silence.<\/p>\n

I put my hand on his. It was chilly.<\/p>\n

I said,\u00a0\u201cYou promised,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as tears fell upon our clasped hands.\u00a0\u201cYou promised you wouldn\u2019t leave us.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The funeral was a haze of whispered condolences and black clothing. Margaret was seated across from me and the children in the front row. She didn\u2019t cry. She embraced people with stiff dignity when they came up to her.<\/p>\n

Every time someone new came around, Emma would cling to my hand and squeeze it with her tiny fingers. Beside me, Liam stood up, making a concerted effort to be the head of the household.<\/p>\n

Margaret came up to us after the service. Her posture was tight, and her eyes were dry with a crimson ring.<\/p>\n

Without introducing herself, she continued,\u00a0\u201cThis is your fault,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in a low voice that was piercing.<\/p>\n

I looked at her, unable to understand.\u00a0\u201cExcuse me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cMy son is dead because of you. If he hadn\u2019t been rushing home to you and those children, he\u2019d still be alive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

I went cold. According to the authorities, Ryan\u2019s accident occurred on a section of roadway that is not close to our home.<\/p>\n
