The ad stated the following:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWanted: Ugliest woman. Nothing repulsive, maimed or disfigured. Good pay guaranteed, and long engagement for successful applicant. Send recent photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man behind the ad was a man named Claude Bartram. He worked as an agent for an American\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/circus\/\">circus<\/a>, Barnum, and Bailey. With debts and bills piling up, Mary Ann saw no choice but to answer the ad.<\/p>\n<p>She didn\u2019t do it to get famous or rich \u2013 it was all about putting food on the table for her beloved children. Mary Ann was a mother above all else.<\/p>\n<p>After Mary Ann sent in a photograph of herself, Bartram reached out to her. The photos of her later became widely known among the public.<\/p>\n<p>But while many people just saw a scary picture of a giant woman, Bartram saw something more. There were details in Mary Ann\u2019s face and personality that went unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6642\" src=\"https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/6.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 764px) 100vw, 764px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/6.jpg 764w, https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/6-224x300.jpg 224w\" alt=\"\" width=\"764\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cShe was not repulsive at all. She had the kind of face one usually finds in a giant, a powerful, masculine jaw, prominent cheek-bones, nose and forehead, but she was unblemished, healthy and strong. She told me she did not like the idea of placing herself on exhibition, she was shy and did not want to be separated from her children,\u201d Bartram later explained, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailystar.co.uk\/news\/weird-news\/ugliest-woman-earth-drew-gasps-24528621\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Daily Star<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her she would earn \u00a310 per week for a year, travelling expenses and all the money from the sale of picture postcards of herself, so she could provide for the education of her children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary Ann wavered but finally agreed.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of her new career, she attracted a lot of attention and was so successful that she was invited to the Dreamland Circus in Coney Island.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6643\" src=\"https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/7.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/7.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/7-239x300.jpg 239w\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"964\" \/><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Coney Island, Dreamland Circus Show.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1920, she took the boat over the Atlantic, and when she arrived in New York, Mary Ann was already a famous face. Almost every newspaper in the Big Apple had a picture of her on the cover as Mary Ann was dubbed \u201cThe Ugliest Woman on Earth\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Ann Bevan would become a massive star at the Coney Island Circus, which was run by Samuel Gumpertz, a successful Missouri showman.<\/p>\n<p>The newcomer from England outshone her circus colleagues, and Mary Ann became the big attraction, in competition with bearded ladies, conjoined twins, and other people with various physical disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>But some people saw the immorality of putting people on display in the circus. Exploiting freak show performers\u2019 disabilities for profit stirred up emotions, even in the 19th century. One doctor, leading neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing, took action and demanded they leave Mary Ann alone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6644\" src=\"https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/8.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/8.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/8-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/8-220x150.jpg 220w\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"520\" \/><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Coney Island freak show. An albino photographed with fat lady.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201dThis unfortunate woman who sits in the sideshow of Ringling Brothers \u2018between Fat Lady and Armless Wonder\u2019 and \u2018affects white lace hats, woollen mittens and high laced shoes\u2019 has a story which is far from mirth-provoking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe, previously a vigorous and good-looking young woman, has become the victim of a disease known as acromegaly,\u201d he wrote in a letter to Time magazine.<\/p>\n<p>But ordinary people still flocked to the circus, and the directors made a lot of money. Unfortunately, Mary Ann had to endure quite a lot in New York. She was forced to wear male clothes to look more unattractive and unfeminine. She also had to put up with comments and laughter, which must have affected her self-esteem.<\/p>\n<p>But there was an upside that convinced her it was worth it. According to the Daily Star, Mary Ann Bevan earned almost $590,000 during her time with the circus. She went through a lot, but she made a fortune.\u00a0Smiling mechanically, she also offered picture postcards of herself for sale.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6645\" src=\"https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/9.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/9.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/9-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ozgunhaberler.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/9-390x220.jpg 390w\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The money enabled Mary Ann to send her four children to boarding school in England. Leaving her children on another continent is, of course, a mother\u2019s worst nightmare \u2013 but Mary Ann had no choice, and in the end, she did everything to create a better future for her kids.<\/p>\n<p>The self-sacrificing Mary Ann showed what true beauty is: when you are willing to give everything for the people you love.<\/p>\n<p>In 1925, she went back to participate in an exhibition in Paris, but for the rest of her life, she lived in New York and worked at the Coney Island Dreamland Show.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Ann died in 1933 of natural causes. She lived to be 59 years old, and after her death, her children fulfilled Mary Ann\u2019s last wish: to be buried in her birth country. In her time, there were no benefits like today; she had to earn a living.
