Meghan Markle\u2019s new Netflix series,\u00a0With Love, Meghan<\/em>, is making waves, not just for its lifestyle tips but also for reigniting discussions about royal names and branding. The Duchess of Sussex raised eyebrows on the show when she revealed that \u201cSussex\u201d is now her last name. But does this departure from tradition challenge royal conventions?<\/p>\n

This whole story began when\u00a0Meghan Markle<\/a>\u00a0corrected Mindy Kaling on her new show,\u00a0With Love, Meghan<\/em>, after Kaling referred to the duchess by her maiden name. \u201dIt\u2019s so funny you keep saying Markle,\u201d Meghan said.<\/p>\n

Meghan shared a similar sentiment in a recent interview with\u00a0People<\/a>.<\/p>\n

She and Harry were given the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex by the late Queen Elizabeth II when they married. According to the Royal Family\u2019s official website, their children\u2019s titles are\u00a0Prince Archie<\/a>\u00a0and Princess Lilibet of Sussex.<\/p>\n

Meghan explained, \u201dIt\u2019s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn\u2019t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children. I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H, and I all have together. It means a lot to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meghan described the Sussex name as \u201da part of our love story.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far, it seems that Meghan has used \u201dSussex\u201d as her last name in more informal settings, such as when she spoke with Mindy Kaling and on\u00a0The Drew Barrymore Show<\/em>. When she appeared on\u00a0The Drew Barrymore Show<\/em>\u00a0to talk about her new projects on March 6, Drew Barrymore introduced her guest by referring to her as \u201dMeghan Sussex.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dThis is the Fast Five with Meghan Sussex,\u201d Barrymore said, kicking off the segment.<\/p>\n

Why its raising eyebrows<\/h2>\n

Although the former Suits star is still formally known as the Duchess of Sussex, this marked the first time she was publicly addressed as \u201dMeghan Sussex.\u201d The name change, however, hasn\u2019t come without criticism from royal fans. Meghan\u2019s decision to adopt Sussex as her surname has raised eyebrows, with many questioning it due to her limited ties to the county. Some have even suggested that her proper last name should be \u201dMountbatten-Windsor.\u201d<\/p>\n

One royal fan\u00a0remarked<\/a>, \u201cHer name is NOT Meghan Sussex. Her name is technically Rachel Mountbatten-Windsor. Sussex is a county in England & part of a courtesy title \u2013 NOT her last name.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another fan was surprised by how Meghan corrected her friend, saying, \u201cSo who criticizes a guest like that? And her last name is not Sussex. Wouldn\u2019t it be Mountbatten-Windsor?\u201d<\/p>\n

A third commenter wrote, \u201d\u2019Duchess of Sussex\u2019 is a courtesy title she holds only through her marriage. It is not her surname, and I\u2019m quite sure she doesn\u2019t have \u2018Meghan Sussex\u2019 on her California driver\u2019s license. Legally, her last name should be Mountbatten-Windsor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meghan\u2019s father, Thomas Markle,\u00a0also expressed disappointment<\/a>, criticizing Meghan for distancing herself from the Markle name, which he believes would upset his late mother.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0shared<\/a>, \u201cMy mum loved Meghan very much but she would be so disappointed to hear that Meghan no longer wants to use the name \u2018Markle.\u2019 My mother was proud to be a Markle. So am I.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also took issue with Meghan\u2019s presentation on the show, claiming she seemed inauthentic and too focused on perfection.<\/p>\n

The couple has been estranged since 2018, after Thomas missed Meghan\u2019s wedding. While some support Thomas, others believe his constant media presence might be why Meghan keeps her distance.<\/p>\n

A challenge of royal conventions?<\/h2>\n

There\u2019s no problem with Meghan using \u201dMeghan Sussex\u201d as her name.<\/p>\n

In fact, many members of the royal family use their titles as surnames. According to\u00a0Debrett\u2019s<\/a>, \u201dThe Duke and Duchess of Sussex can, and do, use \u2018Sussex\u2019 as their surname. This follows the tradition when Prince Harry used \u2018Wales\u2019 as his surname while serving in the army, reflecting his status as the son of the Prince of Wales. Now that he\u2019s the Duke of Sussex, his wife and children are also entitled to use \u2018Sussex\u2019 as their surname.\u201d<\/p>\n

Given the media\u2019s continued use of her maiden name, as seen in her feature in People, it\u2019s likely that Meghan will still be called Meghan Markle for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

Meghan\u2019s decision to use \u201cSussex\u201d as her last name has really got people talking. While some are all for it, others think it\u2019s a bit much since her ties to the county aren\u2019t exactly strong.<\/strong><\/p>\n
