But 20 weeks into the pregnancy, the parents received devastating news during one of the first ultrasounds.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse noticed how their then-unborn son, Parker, had a larger-than-normal head. She immediately understood that something was wrong so and called for assistance. Parker\u2019s\u00a0situation was both serious and startling, all the\u00a0doctors who examined his scans agreed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1665813904\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-e04128993f97684b52f26b42528f7dab\" class=\"newsner-e04128993f97684b52f26b42528f7dab newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-120631\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/03\/05190629\/anto1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"427\" height=\"428\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=10118345192189643&amp;id=5247471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Facebook<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It turned out there was a blockage between the third and fourth ventricles of Parker\u2019s brain, one preventing the spinal fluid from draining. As a result, fluid was building up and squeezing Parker\u2019s brain matter against his skull. The condition apparently occurs in two of every 1,000 births in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>When Crysie and Ryan Grelecki\u00a0received the news about their baby\u2019s abnormality, they were shocked and concerned. But they did what all parents should do: they stood by their unborn child \u2013 unconditionally.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThroughout my pregnancy when I would let my thoughts spiral downward with thoughts of \u201cwhat if\u201d and just plan fear, God would remind me of a song. The lyrics that would play over and over in my head and fill me with His peace went like this \u2013 \u201cGod will make a way, when there seems to be no way, He works in ways we cannot see He will make a way for me \u2026 He will be my guide, hold me closely by His side, with love and strength for each new day God will make a way,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Crysie shared on her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid028NLwf4i1Ck3qUxjzjvaHkQPK5j4oiaUNCwzFFmhWUiip3iwZJuUEFDfF3pbXMY5Rl&amp;id=5247471&amp;__cft__[0]=AZVgcGB-u7q2Fq8hcTSrdFzWhQE9xpFILJYDmSb3ctpsHSioOMD8ghOKytFRoOamyeCNxOq-nwyNKshdwo-XXJF0iIb6Y6C-aJz8COtNe7yZgZ0nWJEob8vKgpZC_OKrrw8-by5GJQsaYBElvDWq6F-cl07abMLxNUvt9WW5tA7b5w&amp;__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, a newborn baby has 90-95% brain matter and 5-10% fluid within the cranial cavity. When Parker was born in September 2008, he had over 98% fluid and just 8 millimeters of brain matter.<\/p>\n<p>He was delivered via C-section at 39 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Parker coming into the world was quite the chaotic event. His future looked uncertain, and everyone was unsure if he would even survive, let alone what kind of life he would have ahead of him.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, he had fantastic support from his parents \u2013\u00a0who loved their precious baby boy more than anything.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was by his side the whole time\u2014talking to him, praying over him, holding his hand, rubbing his head. That unconditional love just rushes over you, and here is this helpless baby that\u2019s been entrusted to me and I can\u2019t do anything for him,\u201d Ryan told.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1824443411\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-2e01e41ca1fb00b2a6eddde5058c2276\" class=\"newsner-2e01e41ca1fb00b2a6eddde5058c2276 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>At just two days old, medical experts at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/choa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><strong>Children\u2019s Healthcare of Atlanta<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0started to drain the excess liquid from his skull and relieve the pressure. Doctors performed craniofacial surgeries to correct his skull malformation, but they knew they were facing a huge challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal was to go in and re-expand the skull, open the skull up and separate those bones that had grown together. And, that was basically what we did\u2014 getting the space for his brain to grow and grow normally,\u201d recalls Joseph Williams, M.D., Chief of Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery at the\u00a0hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks later, Parker was able to go home. According to mother Crysie, it took Parker some time to sit and keep his head up, but ultimately he prevailed.<\/p>\n<p>Parker also skipped the common crawling stage and began to walk right away instead. Parker\u2019s parents say they owe a lot to the\u00a0Children\u2019s Hospital in Atlanta and its staff, who eventually felt like an \u201cextension\u201d of their own family. Even though he\u2019s been through many things that most people won\u2019t have to deal with in a lifetime, he has a lot of great years ahead of him. For a long time, Parker has dreamed of working as a sports commentator.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1550039519\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-0a0d78514d30823ccb281dc8807a62ab\" class=\"newsner-0a0d78514d30823ccb281dc8807a62ab newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>That brain with three pounds of fluid and less than 2% brain matter is the same brain that today is so intelligent and can remember endless amounts of sports knowledge. Parker has also tried his dream job several times \u2013 and he\u2019s a natural talent.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, he also helps out as an announcer for his local high school football team. According to witness reports, he\u2019s amazing at what he does and Parker\u2019s excitement during the games is contagious.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Parker has his struggles directly linked to the brain damage \u2013 but given what he has become, we think he\u2019s a true hero and a very inspiring person as well. I would be proud if I had only half of his gregarious and charismatic personality.
