After being discovered with five years’ worth of matted fur, a severely neglected dog named Matt underwent a transformative makeover. According to the South Plains SPCA, Matt’s fur was matted to his skin, causing excruciating suffering, making it the “worst case of dog neglect we have ever encountered.”
Rescuers had to sedate Matt to cut away three pounds of fur, which also included embedded collars and even beetles. “His hair growth was about five years of matting,” said Kim Moyers, president of the SPCA. The dog had bruises from the tight fur and was anemic, but fortunately, he tested negative for heartworms and tick disease.
After the grooming, Matt looked like a new dog. “He is the most gorgeous-looking dog I’ve ever seen,” said Tori Houston, his foster caretaker. Despite his tough past, Matt is now enjoying walks and a taste of a normal, happy life.
Matt is currently being fostered and will be available for adoption after his full recovery. This transformation story highlights the impact of proper care and compassion for neglected animals.
