I grieved the loss of my son for a year, taking comfort in the company of people like Sarah. She encouraged me to move on, but she had a secret agenda.

I went to see Sarah when she relocated to a different city to thank her. However, nothing could have prepared me for the surprise of her new home. My son was standing there, healthy, alive, and definitely himself.

With terror in her voice, Sarah stumbled, “Rachel, it’s not what you think.” I was taken aback. She informed me that my son had died. How is this possible?

“He’s not your biological son,” Sarah said. After you lost your son, I adopted him. She described her last-ditch effort to give me a “second chance at happiness” in order to lessen my suffering.

As I took in what she had said, I felt both relief and rage. “How did you accomplish this?” Knowing how deeply she had betrayed me, I demanded. Remorseful, Sarah begged for forgiveness, stating, “I never meant to hurt you.”

It would take time to forgive. The path to recovery was paved with intense feelings and challenging discussions. Even so, I held onto the belief that love and forgiveness might someday mend the harm caused by dishonesty.
