In order to pay for her surgery, I had to sell my truck, and now my job is on the line.
For eight years, Luna has been my best buddy. She has supported me during every difficult day, heartbreak, and time when I wanted to give up. I didn’t hesitate when the veterinarian informed me that she needed surgery right away.
My truck was sold. There was no question at all.
Luna was safe and alive when she returned home, wagging her tail. It ought to have ended there. However, I wasn’t prepared for the response when I posted my tale online.
“You’re careless.” “Now, how are you going to get to work?” “You ought to have used the funds for something beneficial.”
Some folks simply did not understand. Others, however, did. Kind messages and anecdotes from strangers about the dogs they would sacrifice everything for began to pour in.
However, the criticism made it to my workplace. I had to ride the bus, so I was already annoyed with my manager for being late a couple times. The proprietor of the business then sent me an email last Friday.
As I opened it, my heart stopped. It stated:
“On Monday morning, come see me in my office.”
That weekend, I didn’t get much sleep. Something didn’t feel right. My manager had previously mentioned that I needed to “get my priorities straight” and that I had become unreliable. Although I enjoyed my work, I was aware that I wasn’t essential.
I felt like a man heading to the gallows when I entered the office on Monday morning. Mr. Dawson, the proprietor, sat behind his big mahogany desk and browsed through a phone app. As I entered, he raised his head.
“Caleb, shut the door.”
I braced myself, gulped hard, and followed his instructions.
He put his phone down and remarked, “I read your post.” “And I knew what your name was.”
I was at a loss for words. My ears throbbed with my heartbeat.
He studied me, leaning back in his chair. Many people would have been hesitant. They would have been concerned about their job, their future, and their cash. However, you didn’t. You gave up something because you were required by someone who was unable to speak for herself.
I hesitantly nodded, not sure what he was trying to say. “Yes, sir.”
His face grew softer. That provides me with all the information I require about you. People like that are exactly what my business needs. Individuals that don’t only consider themselves
Hold on—what?
With his hands in his pockets, he got up and moved toward the window. “I checked your record. You’ve spent five years here. No grievances, no significant errors. You’ve actually been passed over for promotions more than once. I’m responsible for that. Today, however, that is different.
I blinked. “Mister?”
Grinning, he turned back to face me. “Caleb, you’re getting promoted. and a business vehicle.
I thought I misheard him for a moment. A car for work? A raise? I had a constricted throat.
“I—” I began, then halted. “I’m at a loss for words.”
He held out his hand and said, “Say you’ll continue to be the kind of man who would sell his truck to save his dog.”
Still in disbelief, I shook it. “Yes, sir. Of course.
My entire world had changed by the time I left his office. My life had just improved as a result of the same decision that nearly cost me my job.
When I arrived home that evening, Luna was waiting for me at the door with her tail thudding on the ground. I bent over and massaged her ears. “Girl, it appears that we will be alright.”
Perhaps that’s the lesson to be learned from all of this. Doing the right thing will never really put you back, even if it doesn’t make sense to other people. Good things eventually come back, even if it takes some time.
Please share this story if it touched you. Perhaps someone else needs to hear that kindness is still important.
