Wiss Bar Fire That Killed 40 Likely Started by Sparklers on Champagne Bottles, Officials Say

Authorities say a deadly fire that tore through Wiss Bar late Saturday night, killing at least 40 people, was likely ignited by sparklers attached to champagne bottles during a crowded celebration.

According to preliminary findings from fire investigators, the blaze began moments after staff members carried bottles topped with lit sparklers through the packed venue. Witnesses reported seeing sparks reach the ceiling area, which was lined with flammable decorative materials and low-hanging fixtures.

“Everything happened very fast,” said one survivor, who asked not to be identified. “There was cheering, music, and then suddenly fire and smoke everywhere. People started running and screaming.”

The fire spread rapidly due to the bar’s confined space, overcrowding, and limited emergency exits, officials said. Thick smoke filled the room within minutes, trapping dozens of patrons inside. Many victims are believed to have died from smoke inhalation.

Emergency crews arrived quickly, but firefighters said intense heat and heavy smoke made rescue efforts extremely difficult. Several people were hospitalized with severe burns and respiratory injuries.

Local authorities have launched a criminal investigation into possible safety violations. Early reports indicate that Wiss Bar may not have met fire safety regulations, including the use of indoor pyrotechnics, capacity limits, and adequate ventilation.

“This tragedy was preventable,” a fire safety official stated. “Sparklers and open flames should never be used in enclosed spaces like nightclubs or bars.”

The bar has been shut down indefinitely, and the owners are cooperating with investigators. Prosecutors are reviewing whether charges will be filed once the investigation is complete.

A national day of mourning has been declared, as families and friends gather to remember the victims of one of the deadliest nightlife fires in recent years
