“My goal is to not buy food from the store anymore,” she said in a 2023 interview. With produce from her garden, meat from Fisher’s hunting, and eggs from their hens, the family eats mostly off their land. Composting, fish water fertilizing, and zero-waste cooking are now second nature in the Underwood-Fisher household.
Underwood takes pride in her crops—especially tomatoes, of which she grew 25 varieties in 2023 alone. Squash, beans, peppers, and onions also thrive in her care. “Seeing jars filled with black beans or black-eyed peas makes me feel accomplished,” she said.
But this lifestyle shift wasn’t just about the garden—it was about healing. In 2018, a serious fall at their Brentwood home, which left her with over 40 stitches, prompted the family to fully embrace a new chapter. Security concerns and neighborhood issues only added to their decision to move.
Amid their transition, Underwood and Fisher—grounded by their Christian faith—faced personal heartbreak. After welcoming their first son, Isaiah, in 2015, Underwood endured multiple miscarriages. In a tearful prayer, she pleaded for clarity. When a doctor confirmed a healthy pregnancy with their second son, Jacob, in 2019, she whispered, “You heard me.”
